Hash

At this moment I am theoretical yachtmaster meaning I passed all my theory exams. So now I am ready to leave the classroom and start the practical part.

My paperchart navigation skills had to go from zero to hero though and I have to admit that I had a really hard time with it..

But now I am ready for the fun part! Tomorrow we will go out and focus on the practical side of being a yachtmaster. Much more to my liking and I am really looking forward to it.

I think this whole training might even safed my life. 17 days ago I arrived on Antigua and initially I stayed at a hostel without any cooking facilities, but a girl’s got to eat (and drink). Every meal I had to eat out and well, once you are out having your dinner, a bar is just around the corner. So “I have to meet people and network” was enough for me to go in in stead of going to my room :-).

Good as it sounds I did get fed up with it after a while. I craved some vitamins. Luckily I found a room with a kitchen last weekend and entered the Yachtmaster course. I even got back into my running routine!

Last Saturday my brand new roomy asked me: “You want to go on a Hash?” Being the Dutchie I am, I thought he was tripping or something because I just told him that I would be a good girl for a while. I soon found out though that a Hash has nothing to do with drugs of any kind.. Well, maybe a running high, because that is exactly what it is. A running event in which you follow a course (in this case) through trails, bush bush and up on the hills.

How stupid I was to raise my hand when they asked it there were any newby’s.. Apparently there is this whole initiation thing wich (obviously) involves, yet again, drinking. So off I went.. Since then though I have been a good girl..

After my exams next weekend I will fly down to Grenada where I will participate in the Grenada sailing week, after that the RORC 600 on Antigua and after that you will see me as a skipper in the all female Heineken boat “Something Hot” during the Heineken regatta in St Maarten. The rest of the season is still wide open but I am sure it will all fall into place as I go.

I can honestly say that I settled into a life here in the Caribbean and I am very excited about the next couple of months!
